My First Table

Completed in 1999, this Mission Style drafting table was my first attempt at Furniture Design. I completed it for my furniture design class under Derek Chalfant who is now a Professor at Elmira College in New York. Derek is actually more of a fine artist, but was very helpful in guiding me through furniture design. You can see his work here.

Flashback . .

When I was just a wee designer in undergraduate, I came up with four pieces of furniture for my senior thesis. The work was intended to reflect a minimalist direction in domestic furniture. I used birch plywood and hardwood, along with stainless steel hardware. At the senior thesis show, I won the Emil Jaques Silver medal for design excellence.

Muse Poster

Here is my entry for the Muse poster competition sponsored by our local alt-radio station here in Portland. I didn't win, but it was a good exercise to see what I could come up with in an hour. It was good getting back into some graphics.

One DPI

This was a great project I completed back in 2006 with Brendan O'Grady, Jen Sobieraj and a few other friends. It was part on an exhibition for architecture firms in Dallas and we entered this piece for RTKL. It was a great success and we got published in RTKL's publication called Works In Progress. You can check out Jen's blog here and Brendan's website here.

Graphic Designs

Here are a just a few examples of some graphic design pieces I did for KPMG back in the day. The bottom three that are stacked were proposals I designed for the different companies. For the lecture at Notre Dame I described the work I was doing with these types of products.

A Chair Fabrication

The A chair was completed last week! Took it out to Pier park for some photos on a beautiful afternoon.

A Chair Redux

After working on the mock-up I made some changes to the design: raised it up to 18" off the ground and increased the width of the seat and back to make it more comfortable. I'm planning on producing a final version this coming week in dimensional cedar and hope to come up with a prototype for a side table, bench, and an arm chair version. Stay tuned for the A-Series!

A Chair

This is a new chair I've been working on for our growing collection of patio furniture. I went through several iterations of this to reduce the bulky feel, It's easily constructed out of 2x4's and 1x's. I'm going to try and construct a mock up this week and hopefully a finished piece before heading to Texas.

Chicken Coop 101

A few weeks ago I started building the chicken coop for our backyard that my wife asked me to design. We have five little chics now and this will be their new home this year. I designed the coop in Sketchup (above) and after some rough materials estimating I began building it in the shop. The coop features two nesting boxes, a 'guillotine' doorway, covered feeding area, insulated south wall, cross ventilation, and (as far as I know) the first green roof for a chicken coop in North Portland!

Framed Sculpture Series

This is a series of three spatial studies that I did yesterday with some MDF and Hemlock that I had in the shop. I've done some past work like this but wanted to see about using it in a series. I can turn these out pretty qucikly and it has a high visual impact. Each piece is about 6"x8."

Antlers

Here's a modern interpretation of traditional sportsman mounted antlers. I've been toying around with this idea for a while and hope to produce more in the next few days. This is the largest one and I'm thinking of doing a few smaller ones to support it. Best part of this: no deer or woodland creature was harmed in the making of this!!

ND Club Logo

This year I wanted to be more active with the local alumni club for my alma mater, Notre Dame. I did a lot of work for the ND club of Dallas a couple of years ago, so I started by designing their new logo. You'll notice that it looks quite a bit like the "heart oregon" logo, which provided the inspiration. Hopefully in the next few months the logo will start to appear on the club website, mailings, t-shirts and bumper stickers. Go Irish!

The Late Dining Room

This winter Christina and I started a project we'd been discussing since we moved into our house over a year ago. The 'dining room' of our house was an odd arrangement being located on the opposite side of the house from the kitchen and living room. So, as part of our plan to recondition the rooms to new uses I began designing custom bookshelves for one wall of the new library (formerly dining room). Pictured above are images of the Sketchup model along with progress photos of the construction. We enlisted the help of Jason from Maris Custom Cabinetry in Portland to fabricate and install the design. I'm working on the painting now and should have some completed photos ready soon.
